Cook Like a Boss – How to Make Chili Con Carne


Chili con carne is a versatile and important American dish – so much so that Texas has made it the state’s official food back in 1977. In the U.S., chili con carne is more commonly known as “chili”.

For those who have yet to try chili con carne, it’s basically a thick and meaty dish that usually contains beef, tomatoes, beans, and cumin. Chili is also combined with other types of food, creating entirely different types of dishes. This includes:

  • Chili burger – hamburger sandwich topped with chili
  • Chili dog – hot dog in a bun topped with chili
  • Cincinnati chili – chili served with spaghetti or hot dogs.
  • Chili cheese fries – french fries topped with chili and cheese

Aside from teaching you the steps on how to make a terrific chili, we’ll also show you how to make Cincinnati chili. Why? Because it’s a really glorious variant of the dish that we think you must try.

So here’s what you’ll need:

Chili Con Carne Ingredients

  • 2 pounds of lean ground beef
  • 1 46 fl. oz. can of tomato juice
  • 1/8 teaspoon of ground cayenne pepper
  • 1 15 oz. can of kidney beans, drained and rinsed
  • 1/2 teaspoon of white sugar
  • 1 29 oz. can tomato sauce
  • 1/4 cup of chopped green bell pepper
  • 1 15 oz. can of pinto beans, drained and rinsed
  • 1 and 1/2 cups of chopped onion
  • 1/2 teaspoon of dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon of salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon of ground black pepper
  • 1 and 1/2 teaspoons of ground cumin
  • 1/4 cup of chili powder

Optional ingredients (for making Cincinnati chili)

  • Cooked spaghetti noodles
  • Finely-grated sharp cheddar cheese
  • Oyster crackers
  • Hot sauce
  • Cooked hot dogs and steamed buns
