Kryptos is an encrypted sculpture that stands outside the CIA headquarters in Langley, Virginia. This bizarrely cool sculpture was created by American artist Jim Sanborn in 1990. As you can imagine, this sculpture has caused much speculation surrounded the meaning of the messages scribed on its walls. To this very day, the last piece of the puzzle is yet to be solved.
Below, the crazy dude who came up with the genius idea to create a sculpture that challenges the very foundations of crytanalysis. The word ‘Kryptos’ is the word meaning ‘hidden’ in Greek. This wasn’t cheap to make either with construction coming in at $250,000 USD.
The NSA released the below first breakthrough of the Kryptos code using poly-alphabetic substitution yet the last square remains yet to be solved.
(Below) This is what’s written on the famous sculpture from passages 1 to 4 left to right.
Solution of passage 1
- BETWEEN SUBTLE SHADING AND THE ABSENCE OF LIGHT LIES THE NUANCE OF IQLUSION
Solution of passage 2
- IT WAS TOTALLY INVISIBLE HOWS THAT POSSIBLE ? THEY USED THE EARTHS MAGNETIC FIELD X THE INFORMATION WAS GATHERED AND TRANSMITTED UNDERGRUUND TO AN UNKNOWN LOCATION X DOES LANGLEY KNOW ABOUT THIS ? THEY SHOULD ITS BURIED OUT THERE SOMEWHERE X WHO KNOWS THE EXACT LOCATION ? ONLY WW THIS WAS HIS LAST MESSAGE X THIRTY EIGHT DEGREES FIFTY SEVEN MINUTES SIX POINT FIVE SECONDS NORTH SEVENTY SEVEN DEGREES EIGHT MINUTES FORTY FOUR SECONDS WEST X LAYER TWO
Solution of passage 3
- SLOWLY DESPARATLY SLOWLY THE REMAINS OF PASSAGE DEBRIS THAT ENCUMBERED THE LOWER PART OF THE DOORWAY WAS REMOVED WITH TREMBLING HANDS I MADE A TINY BREACH IN THE UPPER LEFT HAND CORNER AND THEN WIDENING THE HOLE A LITTLE I INSERTED THE CANDLE AND PEERED IN THE HOT AIR ESCAPING FROM THE CHAMBER CAUSED THE FLAME TO FLICKER BUT PRESENTLY DETAILS OF THE ROOM WITHIN EMERGED FROM THE MIST X CAN YOU SEE ANYTHING Q ?
Solution of passage 4
This is yet to be solved however Sanborn said that the answers to the first sections contain clues to the last section. There are many actively working on cracking the last passage with the CIA and NSA admitting to have their people (not on mission priority) to be trying to crack the code.
Sanborn has said should he die before the last passage is solved, he will leave a strong clue to how to solve it. You’d think in this day and age with all the NSA’s brute computing hardware that this would be easily solvable however Sanborn was helped by a man names Ed Schiedt – the Chairman of the CIA Crytographic Center who then retired.
