There’s a rise in new subscription startups digging deep to get on your feet, we heard from one of the new kids on the block Sock Mogul to get the inside scoop on the emerging subscription socks trend. As their name suggests, they mean business when it comes to socks. Like their competitors, Sock Mogul sends random designer socks on a subscription term. However, owner Luke Fletcher claims “the quality of our designs and fabrics match or surpass what’s already on the market”, he adds “but, that’s not what we’re all about”. The really interesting thing these guys are doing is their marketing. They don’t seem to care about the rules or offending. “She’ll love your #ock” is plastered all over their marketing and their Facebook profile.

Not to mention the name of their sock plans; “Rogue”, “Tycoon” and “Magnate”. Who doesn’t want to be a part of a club with names like that?

Fletcher continues “there’s no need to play nice guy and hope for the best. Aggressive messaging and sticky branding is a big part of retail marketing…plus, it’s a hell of a lot of fun”. He comments on his competitors “they’re all banging the same drum and it sounds like a damn marching band, the Sock Mogul brand is about prodding for a reaction and looking for the eyebrow raise, like someone catching a glimpse of your socks under your business wear”.

Fletcher continued to tell me about their brand and subscription product service, but I glanced down mid-conversation and caught a pop of colour beaming from his ankles (as he crossed his leg over his knee). It was a set of yellow and blue moustache print socks. I had to stop him there – “Nice socks!”. He laughed, “these are my lucky socks. They’re the first sample I had made and feature the old business name “Silk Rogue”. I had the name market tested and it didn’t go well. I wanted it to be simple and powerful, Sock Mogul hits this harder”. It’s clear Luke lives message and brand and Sock Mogul is definitely a standout from what I’ve seen.

In a growing world of quality subscription socks and noisy online advertising, these guys (Sock Mogul) are doing a great job at standing out. I’m pleased to say I’m officially a Sock Mogul myself, thanks for the socks Fletch!
